HSMAI NYC Charity

HSMAI New York Chapter's
Community Involvement

Effective giving involves making informed choices, being confident that your gift will make a difference, and being assured that your donation is an efficient use of your money and time.

By identifying local charities that have a natural synergy with the hospitality industry as well as investing in the future leadership of our industry, we are confident that our outreach program consistently meets the strategic goal of effective giving.

Dear HSMAI Greater New York Chapter,

I would like to extend my thanks for your generosity in funding this project for my environmental science class. So far this year we have adopted an oyster restoration station in our local estuary for field research, and studied the effects of water pollution...I can't wait to tell my students we'll be culminating our ecology unit with a trip to our local aquarium! My kids will be so excited, and I think they will enhance their learning with their tour of the aquarium.

With gratitude,
Ms. Chandler

American Cancer Society Hope Lodge

The American Cancer Society: Offering Hope

The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge offers 60 private guest rooms in a home-like environment at no cost to patients and their families traveling to our city to take advantage of world class medical treatment. Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their families a free, temporary place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city.

Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows Hope Lodge guests to focus on the most important thing: getting well. The lodging component continues to make this a perfect partnership for our chapter’s charitable efforts. Learn more about the work of this inspired charity.

DonorsChoose.org

DonorsChoose.org makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need, moving us closer to a nation where students in every community have the tools and experiences they need for a great education.

DonorsChoose.org was started by a history teacher. In 2000, Charles Best, a teacher at a Bronx public high school, wanted his students to read Little House on the Prairie. As he was making photocopies of the one book he could procure, Charles thought about all the money he and his colleagues were spending on books, art supplies, and other materials. And he figured there were people out there who'd want to help — if they could see where their money was going. Charles sketched out a website where teachers could post classroom project requests, and donors could choose the ones they wanted to support. His colleagues posted the first 11 requests. Then it spread. Today, they are open to every public school in America.  Their team has vetted and fulfilled over 600,000 classroom project requests that range from butterfly cocoons, to robotics kits, to Little House on the Prairie.

Our Commitment to Giving

Throughout the year we organize various events and drives to support our charities, from members supporting our charities by encouraging their individual companies to support them – i.e., a dinner hosted for USA TODAY at Hope Lodge’s premises; Ritz Carlton Central Park sponsored ice cream party for Hope Lodge residents.  In addition, our chapter organized a donation of unused hotel supplies from member properties for Hope Lodge.

HSMAI, a global organization of sales, marketing, and revenue management professionals, represents all segments of hospitality.
